![]() ![]() Although elegance is the word in this grand coffee-plantation-house-turned-hotel, you’ll see everything from diners in business attire to guests in casual garb just back from the hinterlands. An impressive selection of 100-plus wines and a decadent dessert menu-the coffee-cream “Pie Grano de Oro” is the must-try option here-round out the offerings. The garden area is a perfect spot for lunch on a warm day-choose from among a variety of light sandwiches and salads, or opt for dinner in the elegant indoor dining area for dishes like breaded sea bass with orange sauce and macadamia nuts or cerdo en salsa tamarindo (roasted pork in tamarind sauce). The Hotel Grano de Oro houses one of San José's premier dining destinations: a splendid restaurant wrapped around a lovely indoor patio and bromeliad-filled garden. We might not be back for a while, but if it’s within a short driving distance for you, it’s worth checking out.The Hotel Grano de Oro houses one of San José's premier dining destinations: a splendid restaurant wrapped around a lovely indoor patio and bromeliad-filled garden. The best that can be said about Ocean Delight is it reminded us of the fun of dim sum on the weekend. Restrooms: Never got around to checking them out, but I held my own until we got home. Parking: Seemed to be plenty in front, around the side and in the back. ThGe amount of good food for a relatively small sum is the main reason for the popularity of dim sum. It was nice to see the owners working the room. ![]() The language barrier between Chinese and English speaking people only arose once ( pork instead of tofu ). Service: The women who manned the carts were friendly and helpful. There’s a case with bottles of wine near the entrance which tells customers “we’ve got wine”, but we stuck with hot tea which was very good. Another dish, asparagus, was requested at the beginning of our meal, but arrived toward the end with dessert. One dish was advertised as bean and tofu, but became obvious it was filled with pork. Other people might rate those same dishes 4 or 5 stars, but there’s no way we could do that after eating top-of-the-line dim sum in other restaurants. Everything we tried was worth 3 or 4 stars. Since we mostly eat fish and vegetables, we focused on those choices. The rest of our lunch moved in much the same way. Within 1 minute of arriving, the first cart was already at our table with a sampling of food in baskets. Since we arrived for dim sum, we never opened the menu and instead focused out attention on the carts of food rolled around the room. The layout, furnishings and atmosphere reminded me of a typical Chinese easant and low key. It looks like the type of place which housed a Bob’s Big Boy in an earlier life. Dining Room: Ocean Delight is in a standalone building along Monterey Road about one block north of Blossom Hill Road. Good friends of our’s were driving through San Jose on their way to Southern California and suggested we get together for Sunday lunch at one of their favorite places for dim sum, Ocean Delight. The food is unreal and prices are hard to beat. ![]() Star Ratings: - Overall: 3 - Food Quality: 3 - Food Quantity: 4 - Dining Room Attractiveness: 3 - Choice Of Food: 3 - Service: 4 - Noise: 3 - Price: 3 - Value: 4 - Parking: 4 - Restrooms: ? - Ambiance: 3 My wife and I really like dim sum, but we’ve gotten spoiled by the many meals we’ve had at restaurants near their home in the Rowland Heights - Diamond Bar area east of Los Angeles. Downsize your expectations for something special. Suggestion: It’s a good middle-of-the-road place. The bathroom was not clean either and the floor in the hallway on the way over was gross. THe sesame balls were gummy and not hot, no crispy edge before the pillow of sweet glutinous rice- ours were lukewarm and greasy. The bean curd skin rolls were dry and weirdly chewy, the onion pancake was fabulous, crunchy, tasty, fried skin. The spare ribs were bony and chewy and bland flavored. The dumplings are then steamed causing the aspic to liquefy into a broth that fills the traditional dumpling with savory juicy goodness. Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) By adding aspic to seasoned poultry, moist Berkshire-Duroc pork and fresh crab. The seafood su mai were ground bits of whatever but suspiciously like surimi. MENU House Specials Our house special classic Chinese style dim sum. I had to ask for the picture book three times and it did not include prices either. They do not have an active cart loaded with hot steaming baskets nd when i asked for a paper to write down our choices I was rebuked by the waiter that was not how they did it. Even though we had been once before and were definitely not impressed, based on her review we decided to give it a second chance. One of my former students rated this place highly on her food blog. My dear friend and I like to eat dim sum and have visited several places in the area. ![]()
